In the first part of this show, the work Rock (by Nuno Côrte-Real) will be performed by Orquestra do Atlântico, as well as the work L’aprés-midi d’un Faune (by Claude Debussy), by this orchestra and the Vortice Dance Company; the second part of the show will be dedicated to the famous work by Igor Stravinsky The Rite of Spring, which will also be performed by the aforementioned orchestra and dance company.

In the show A Sagração da Primavera (The Rite of Spring), part of the “Temporada Darcos”, which has the musical direction of Nuno Côrte-Real and the signature of the choreographers Cláudia Martins and Rafael Carriço, the aforementioned work by Stravinsky will be approached in the light of a new technological era, in which the languages of dance, videography, videomapping and music are mixed, in an overwhelming sensorial experience. In this innovative approach, fears, desires, desires and bodies will be ritualized, in an intense game of light, dance, music and image. In it, the action develops in a direct analogy with the speed of today’s springs, where the Dance of the final Sacrifice is multiplied in time and space.

It should be remembered that The Rite of Spring, premiered in Paris in 1913, is one of the most outstanding works of Western culture. On the one hand, Stravinsky’s music, an explosive break with the canons of composition of the time, however, has Lithuanian folk songs at its base, which gives an idiomatic unity that is not always perceptible. On the other, Nijinsky’s innovative choreography for the Ballets Russes, contrary to conventional dramaturgy, in movements of unparalleled physical and emotional intensity. Divided into two parts (The Worship of the Earth and The Great Sacrifice), the work The Rite of Spring tells the story of a tribal ritual where a young woman must be sacrificed, as an offering to the god of Spring.

Interestingly, Nijinsky’s debut in the field of choreography had taken place a year earlier, in 1912, with the work Prélude à l’après-midi d’un Faune, conceived by the composer Claude Debussy, which was based on a homonymous poem by Stéphane Mallarmé. For many, the beginning of musical Modernism, this is Debussy’s most famous work, who wrote it between 1891 and 1894. .

The price of tickets to watch this show at the Teatro-Cine de Torres Vedras is five euros. It should be noted that it was presented on the 29th of January at the Centro Cultural e de Congressos das Caldas da Rainha and will also have a third presentation, on the 23rd of February, at the Coliseu de Lisboa.

It should be remembered that the “Temporada Darcos” is a unique initiative in the national music scene in which classical music is disseminated according to its different approaches and stylistic nuances, being directed by the composer and conductor from Torri, Nuno Côrte-Real. This season’s shows are mostly performed by the Ensemble Darcos group, one of the most prestigious Portuguese chamber music groups today, which is also directed by Nuno Côrte-Real and features a lineup that varies depending on the concert programme. It should be noted that acclaimed national and international soloists and orchestras have participated in the “Temporada Darcos”, as well as prominent figures in the national music scene as commentators. Being co-organized by the Municipality of Torres Vedras and by Darcos – Cultural Association, the “Temporada Darcos” has as its starting point the municipality of Torres Vedras and more specifically the Teatro-Cine de Torres Vedras. In 2022 it has its 15th edition.
