Susana Carvalho

Susana Carvalho was born in Porto and studied communication design at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon (FBAUL). In 2004 she moved to the Netherlands to complete the illustrious Type and Media master programme at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK).

In 2005, together with Kai Bernau, she founded Atelier Carvalho Bernau in The Hague in the Netherlands – an independent studio dedicated to graphic design, typography and type design.

She is a founding member of Open Work, a design collective that investigated the connection between digital and analogue, sender and receiver, designer and user.

Her interest in education led her to obtain a Master’s degree in Arts Education in 2019 at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, where she researched the potential of space as a pedagogical tool in the graphic design classroom.

Susana has taught on the Graphic Design Degree at KABK 2011-2021, as well as at ArtEz, Arnhem 2013-2014, and has been a guest lecturer conducting workshops and lectures all over Europe.
