JOÃO RICARDO (1993, Portugal) holds a master’s degree in Musical Arts from Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCSH/UNL) since 2019. He studied composition and analysis with Luís Soldado and attended workshops and masterclasses with Jaime Reis, Vincent Debut, Michelle Agnes Magalhães, Ake Parmerud, Hans Tutschku, Luis Naón, João Pedro Oliveira, Carlos Caires, Dimitris Andrikopoulos, António Sousa Dias, among others.
His operas have been premiered and performed by INESTÉTICA COMPANHIA TEATRAL (a dor de todas as ruas vazias, 2019), QUARTETO CONTRATEMPUS (O que vai para o mar, 2022; Torre da Memória, 2023)) and OPERAFEST LISBOA (Eco/Arquipélago, 2020; Minotauro, 2022); his aria for tenor Quando enganei os deuses, with libretto by Tatiana Faia, won the Carlos de Ponte Leça prize at Maratona Ópera XXI, in September 2021. He was selected as Composer in Residence at ORQUESTRA DE CÂMARA DE CASCAIS E OEIRAS for the year 2022, and in November of the same year his piece Mãe desconhecida for oboe and piano won the Concurso Internacional de Música Terras de Santiago in the composition category; he was also selected as Composer in Residence for Festival CriaSons IV by MUSICAMERA PRODUÇÕES.
His most recent academic texts are included in publications suchs as New Approaches to Sound, Music, and Media” (Bloomsbury Publishing), “Sonoridades Eborense” (CHAM, CESEM), “INSAM: Journal of Contemporary Music, Art and Technology”, among others. He’s affiliated with Centro de Estudos de Sociologia e Estética Musical (CESEM FCSH/UNL) since September 2019, within Grupo de Investigação em Música Contemporânea and Linha de Estudos de Ópera. He’s also affiliated as a researcher with the project “PASEV: Patrimonialization of Évora’s Soundscape” (CESEM UÉvora). He also works regularly with “AREPO – Associação de Ópera e Artes Contemporâneas”, in score engraving and technical assistance.
