Known for his virtuosic and energetic performances, the Portuguese recorder player António Carrilho has performed in concerts with innumerable ensembles and orchestras nationally and internationally, in works ranging from the pre-Baroque to the avant-garde, as soloist, chamber musician or conductor.
He has appeared as soloist in Portugal with the Gulbenkian Foundation Orchestra, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitana Orchestra, the Póvoa de Varzim Symphony, and the Orchestra of Cascais and Oeiras; with the new-music ensemble OrchestrUtópica, and with prominent period-instrument ensembles, including Il Divino Sospiro and Os Músicos do Tejo. Internationally, he has also performed with the Baroque Orchestra of Nagoya in Japan, Baroque Orchestra of Amazonia ( Brasil) and the Concerto Balabile in Holland. He was a prize winner in the Moeck Solo Recorder Competition in the UK in 2001 and at the Solo Recorder Competition of Haifa in Israel in 1999. In addition he earned prizes for best interpretation of works from the 17th and 20th Centuries along with the audience prize at other international competitions.
As a conductor he has directed cantatas by Bach and Telemann, and the operas “Dido and Aeneas” of Purcell, “La Descent d’Orphée aux Enfers” of Charpentier, “La Serva Padrona” of Pergolesi, “La Dirindina” of Scarlatti, “Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse” of Boismortier, “Venus and Adonis” of John Blow, “Arlechinatta” of Salieri, “Orfeo” of Monteverdi and “Orfeo e Eurydice” of Gluck. Mr. Carrilho is guest conductor of Nagoya’s Baroque Orchestra in Japan.
He has performed in important music festivals throughout Europe, America and Asia, in regular performances with La Paix du Parnasse (member of G. E. M. A, Spain), Syrinx : XXII (member of C. M. A, USA), Syrinxello; Borealis Ensemble, Os Músicos do Tejo. He is the Music Director and soloist of the ensemble Melleo Harmonia and Antigua.
He has recorded on the Naxos, Encherialis, and Numérica, labels, as well as for the Cultural Ministry of Amazonia (Brazil), Arte (France), Public Television and the Arts Ministry/Movement for Musical Patrimony of Portugal.
He teaches regularly at the International Masterclasses for Early Music in Urbino (Italy), as well as in Portugal at the Lisbon Masterclass.
Mr. Carrilho is co-organizer of the International Early Music Summer courses of Casa de Mateus, Portugal and has also taught classes and seminars in Portugal, Holland, Spain, Germany, Italy, India, Japan, Brazil and Australia
