Dancer and choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas won the Chanel Next Prize.
According to CNN Portugal, this international award aims to applaud innovation in the arts and culture, and creates the necessary conditions for artists to experiment with visionary ideas and test new forms of art.
Marlene was born in Cape Verde but currently lives in Portugal. Known for her electrifying and disruptive presence, she focuses her work on themes of impurity and intensity, confronting the public with different ways of looking at the world.
She is one of 10 awarded with €100,000 in funding, as well as access to networking opportunities facilitated by the Chanel brand, in order to further her pioneering work.
In addition to this award, the dancer had already been internationally recognized by the Government in 2017, with the Silver Dance Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2018 and also with the Best International Performance Award for Les Prémis de la Crítica d’Arts Escèniques de Barcelona. , in 2020.
